News and Information

APWA Washington,

As your 2020-chapter president, my thoughts are with all of you as our community addresses this unprecedented challenge.  In concern for the well being of our extended APWA community, and due to new restrictions, our chapter leadership has chosen to cancel our scheduled Spring Conference in Vancouver, Washington.  This decision did not come lightly and was made with the health of our potential attendees and hotel staff in mind.

I am truly saddened that we will not be able to assemble our APWA family this Spring.  However, I am inspired to know that each and every one of you has and will continue to work diligently to help ensure the safety of our community in these trying times.  Because that’s what public works is all about……it’s what we do…and I couldn’t be prouder of you for it!

Conference Cancellation Details:
Conference Registration: Individual and vendor registrations for the spring conference will be refunded in full for those already registered.
Hotel Reservations: We have worked with the Vancouver Hilton to eliminate the 30-day cancellation policy for hotel rooms.  Therefore, room cancellations, made 72-hours prior to the scheduled reservation, will not incur a cancellation fee.  If you made hotel reservations, please remember to cancel them.
Sponsorship: In coming weeks, we will be reaching out to spring conference sponsors to discuss options.

Moving Forward:
We expect that requirements for social distancing will influence committee operations over the coming weeks or months.  Therefore, Scott Sawyer will be working with committee chairs to provide expanded options for virtual meetings and other means of continuing committee work while ensuring the safety of our community.

Cancellation of our spring conference is only a bump in the road of the 2020 reunion tour!  We are currently working to merge all spring social conference events with the fall conference in Spokane, Washington.  Detailed specification for the fall conference shall be distributed in the coming months.

Just as we did for PWX 2019, our chapter will continue to rise to the occasion and help our community.  I encourage all of you to reach out to those vulnerable members of our society and help them through these hard times.  Remember, our heroes wear dirt……and the world will see that again!
If you have any questions, feel free to let me know.

Thanks,
Your APWA 2020 Washington State Chapter President
Donald J. Huling, P.E.
