Project management is a skill we all do from planning a birthday party to buying a car. Most of the time we don't create a project plan, however in public works we have to track many tasks and good project management is an approach to be able to manage all these tasks. From the initiation of the tasks or events to the successful close, there is a process that allows you to set up to monitor each step and get to the desired outcome. This class gives an approach that covers best practices and helps explain how to leverage available tools to have successful projects.

Speakers:

Eric Stewart is a certified Project Manager (PMP) with over 25 years of experience managing projects in information technology, healthcare, aerospace manufacturing, human resources, and legal support services. He is currently the Program Chair for the Healthcare Informatics Program at Bellevue College.

He has also taught project management and lean six sigma course for the City of Renton, Snohomish County, City of Kennewick, City of Yakima, Providence Health and Services, GE Healthcare, University of Washington, City University and is also teaching PM certificate courses at the Everett Community College Corporate and Continuing Education Department. He also designed and instructed the first Change Management course for the UW certificate program and contributed to the curriculum for "PM Skills for Life", a course for non-PMs sponsored by PMIEF (Project Management Institute Education Foundation). He has a passion for teaching and has experience in adult learning in academic, corporate, and non-profit learning environments.

Jim Rioux is currently working for the City of Olympia Public Works Department as an Engineering Project Manager. Jim has served as a project manager for the City of Olympia for 15 years overseeing numerous construction projects that ranged from major transportation improvements, water, and sewer infrastructure upgrades as well as small building remodels.

In 2014 Jim took part in a major LEAN project that sought to identify process improvements for the City’s construction project delivery business practices. One result that process was that Jim was asked to lead a multi-year effort to purchase, configure and implement a cloud base Project Information Management System for the City’s Engineering Department. Jim continues as lead for maintenance and enhancements to that system.

Jim received his Project Management Professional certification in June 2019 with the dubious distinction of being among the first PMP’s to take the PMP exam online due to COVID restrictions.

Prior to joining the City of Olympia Jim worked for the State Department of Health in the areas of water resources and water utility planning.

Jim received a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1984 and a Master of Environmental Studies Degree from the Evergreen State College in 1997.
