May 29, 2019
Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) Board Room
Seattle

Overview:

People traveling to and through downtown Seattle face many challenges over the next five years as public and private construction projects transform the city.  This period of transition, known as the “Seattle Squeeze,” kicked off in earnest earlier this year with the three-week closure of SR 99 to realign the highway into the new SR 99 tunnel and to prepare to demolish the Alaskan Way Viaduct.  That change was followed closely by the end of bus operations in the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel, adding 830 bus trips to surface streets every day.  Addressing these changes and avoiding gridlock required extensive planning, coordination, and communications between the Washington State Department of Transportation, King County Metro, the Port of Seattle and the City of Seattle.  Please join us to learn more about how that coordination occurred, its results, and what efforts lie ahead for the Seattle Squeeze.
